I found out I had autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in a routine physical about 6 years ago. Unlike viral
hepatitis there is no known cure for AIH. It kills 90% of those who go untreated for 10 years. The
standard American treatment for this disease is steroids (prednisone) and later if possible immune
system suppressants (imuran). Some doctors also recommend the use of actigall, which is used to
keep bile ducts free. When diagnosed I had ALT readings in the 150 to 200 range (normal 10-58). I
was able to get the ALT readings to the normal range taking prednisone and actigall but needed to
take a minimum of 15 mg a day to keep it there. One of the unfortunate side effects of this treatment
is that you lose 4-10% of your bone mass each year. After over a year on the steroids I began
