Zanthoxylum extract (or Sichuan pepper extract) is extracted from pods of the tiny fruit of plants
of Zanthoxylum (most commonly Z. piperitum, Z. simulans). These plants are widely grown and
consumed in Asia as a spice. Despite the name, it is not related to black pepper or to chili
peppers. It is widely used in the cuisine of Sichuan, China, from which it takes its name, as
well as Vietnamese, Korean, Nepalese and Japanese cuisines, among others. Traditionally,
Zanthoxylum herbs (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli and Fructus Piper) have been used to aid the
elimination of water accumulation in the Lung causing dyspnea and wheezing with an inability
to lie down. These herbs are also frequently used for epigastric and abdominal coldness and
pain, toothache and diarrhea.
